Taiwan, formerly known as Formosa, is an island about 100 miles off of Mainland China. It is a mountainous island with the highest peak rising to over 13,000 feet.

The island has a tropical monsoon-like climate, similar to that of southern Mainland China. Rainfall, which is especially heavy in spring and summer, totals over 80 inches on most all of the island, with much more in the mountains. Typhoons can bring heavy rains and powerful winds to the island in the warmer months, while Western Pacific winter storms can bring clouds and rain in the cooler seasons. Between these storms, Taiwan is generally a very sunny location, with an average of over six hours of sunshine in winter and over eight hours in summer.

Temperatures throughout the year are very similar to southern Florida (e.g. Fort Myers), although precipitation is greater for every month. In lower elevations, very high humidity makes the summer heat oppressive. Winters, however, are generally very pleasant, almost cool.
