The National Weather Service in Burlington has extended the
* Flood Warning for...
An Ice Jam Accompanied By Rain And Snowmelt in...
Northwestern Orleans County in northeastern Vermont...
Northern Franklin County in northwestern Vermont...
* Until 1115 AM EST Thursday
* At 1004 PM EST, river gauges along the Missisquoi River continued
to indicate ice jams were in place. Route 78 remains closed from
west of Swanton to the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge.
Residents in areas that were impacted by the January flood should
be on alert for any changes in the river and are advised to follow
local law enforcement instructions. Numerous ice jams are in place
along the Missisquoi River and local field flooding will be
possible all the way upstream to North Troy. Additional flooding
will be possible along Route 105 between Sheldon Springs and East
Berkshire due to ice jams.
* Ice jams are very unpredictable and can break up, move and jam
again very quickly. Water backing up behind the jam is the main
flood threat, and can flood areas under deep water with
surprising speed. Favored ice jam locations are where a river
bends or slows, at bridge abutments, or near islands, sand bars,
and other obstructions to river flow.
* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Enosburg Falls, Swanton, Jay In Franklin County, Swanton Village,
North Troy Village, Highgate Falls, Montgomery Center, Enosburg
Falls Village, Sheldon, Troy, Enosburg, Montgomery, Jay, Westfield,
Berkshire, Highgate, Richford, Franklin, North Troy and Sheldon
River levels may fluctuate rapidly due to ice with little or no
warning. Residents in low lying flood prone areas should remain alert
for possible flooding due to ice jams. Ice jam flooding can be very
localized and not affect all locations along the river as in a
typical river flood.
