...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 PM PDT THIS EVENING FOR
VERY HOT AND DRY CONDITIONS FOR FIRE WEATHER ZONES 610, 611, 639,
640, AND 641...
The National Weather Service in Pendleton has issued a Red Flag
Warning, which is in effect until 10 PM PDT this evening.
* AFFECTED AREA...In Oregon...Fire weather zone 610...611...and
639 covering the east slopes of the Oregon Cascades and the
Eastern Columbia River Gorge. Oregon Fire Zone 640 covering the
Prineville District and the Crooked River Grasslands. Oregon
Fire Zones 641 west of Umatilla and Lexington covering the North
* TIMING...The air mass will remain dry and marginally unstable
through the evening hours. The winds will increase this
afternoon and gusty winds will occur between 3 PM to 8 PM.
* HAINES...Moderate category of 5.
* HUMIDITY...The afternoon relative humidity will range from 8 to
20 percent with the lowest humidity south of Prineville and
* WINDS...In the Eastern Columbia River Gorge...west winds will
increase to 15 to 25 mph gusting to 35 mph. Elsewhere...west to
northwest winds will increase to 8 to 15 mph gusting to 25 mph.
* IMPACTS...Extreme fire behavior can be expected with new or
ongoing fires. Outdoor burning is not recommended. Travelers
heading to north central and central Oregon for the solar
eclipse should be extremely careful and avoid parking in dry
grass with a hot exhaust.
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now....or will shortly. A combination of
strong winds...low relative humidity...and warm temperatures can
contribute to extreme fire behavior.
