producing heavy rain across the warned area. Up to two inches of
rain have already fallen. Flash flooding is expected to begin
shortly. Water was reported over some roads in West Frankfort,
Illinois.

Carbondale, Marion, Herrin, Perryville, West Frankfort,
Murphysboro, Benton, Carterville, Carmi, Anna, Johnston City,
McLeansboro, Zeigler, De Soto, Norris City, Crainville, Cambria,

already fallen. Flash flooding is expected to begin shortly.

...FLASH FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE SUNDAY
NIGHT...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* Portions of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western
Kentucky, and southeast Missouri, including the following
areas, in southern Illinois, Alexander, Edwards, Franklin,
Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson,
Massac, Perry IL, Pope, Pulaski, Saline, Union, Wabash, Wayne
IL, White, and Williamson. In southwest Indiana, Gibson, Pike,
Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh, and Warrick. In western Kentucky,
Ballard, Carlisle, Daviess, Fulton, Henderson, Hickman,
McCracken, and Union KY. In southeast Missouri, Bollinger,
Butler, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Mississippi, New Madrid, Perry
MO, Ripley, Scott, Stoddard, and Wayne MO.

* Through late Sunday night

* The Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for all of southeast
Missouri, Southern Illinois, Southwest Indiana, and a few border
counties of West Kentucky along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.
Numerous thunderstorms with very heavy rain are expected to
persist across the Watch area through Saturday morning,
gradually working back toward Southeast Missouri and Southwest
Illinois during the afternoon and evening hours on Saturday.
Areas further east may see a break in the precipitation Saturday
into Saturday night, but will then see more thunderstorms with
very heavy rainfall move in from the west late Saturday night
and through the day Sunday. Radar estimates of two to five
inches of rain have already fallen over parts of the watch area.
An additional three to five inches of rain is expected to occur
before the storm system exits the area Sunday night, with the
heaviest rainfall expected in the Southeast Missouri Foothills.
Locally higher amounts are also possible where numerous
thunderstorms move across the same area.

* In addition to the possibility of flash flooding of some
roadways and streams, the heavy rainfall is expected to cause
rises on many of the area rivers, particularly the smaller
rivers in southeast Missouri, such as the Saint Francis, Black,
and Current rivers. Given the widespread rainfall across the
region, other larger river systems, such as the Mississippi and
Ohio Rivers will see rises in water levels occur in early May.
Due to the prolonged period of rain, some of the flash flood
warnings that are issued may be transitioned to overland flood
warnings.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

The Mississippi River at Chester
* From Saturday afternoon until further notice.
* At 10:00 PM Friday the stage was 25.4 feet.
* Flood stage is 27.0 feet.
* Major flooding is forecast.
* The river is forecast to rise above flood stage Saturday
afternoon and crest near 41.4 feet Thursday afternoon. Additional
rises are possible.
* Impact: At 41.1 feet...Near this height, Missouri Route V southeast
of Bloomsdale is closed between Highway 61 and North White Sands
Road.
* Impact: At 40.8 feet...Main Street in Evansville inundated.
* Impact: At 40.7 feet...At this height, Missouri State Highway 51 is
closed from Perry County Road 944 and the Illinois State Line at
the bridge into Chester.
* Impact: At 40.0 feet...A hunting lodge near the mouth of the
Kaskaskia River begins flooding.
* Impact: At 39.0 feet...Railroad tracks in St. Mary, Missouri begin
flooding.
* Impact: At 38.7 feet...Illinois State Highway 155 at Prairie du
Rocher begins flooding near this height.
* Impact: At 38.5 feet...Illinois Route 3 at Rockwood and Missouri
Highway J just west of Highway 61 between Ste. Genevieve and St.
Marys begin flooding near this height.
* Impact: At 38.4 feet...At this level IL Route 3 at levee east of
Cora inundated.
* Impact: At 38.1 feet...Near this level, Illinois Route 3 near the
Mary's River bridge is closed.
* Impact: At 37.7 feet...Near this height, Route J is closed in both
directions at U.S. Highway 61.
* Impact: At 37.6 feet...At this height, Missouri Route M between
Route H and Perry County Road 924 is closed.
* Impact: At 37.5 feet...The southbound lane on Kaskaskia Street and
the south parking lot at Menard Correctional Center begins
flooding.
* Impact: At 37.2 feet...Near this height, U.S. Highway 61 is closed
between Ste. Genevieve and Route J.
* Impact: At 37.0 feet...Union Pacific property along Water Street
begins to flood.
* Impact: At 36.9 feet...Near this height, U.S. Highway 61 is closed
from Route J to St. Mary.
* Impact: At 36.5 feet...Chester water intake house is flooded...
damage begins to occur to 4 homes and administration buildings at
Menard State Prison. Prairie DuRocher pump station damaged and
road to Kaskaskia Lock inundated.
* Impact: At 36.0 feet...Chester water works pumphouse is threatened
by flood waters. Highway 61 is closed at the bend at St. Marys and
a detour is set up through town.
* Impact: At 35.2 feet...In Perry County, Highway C is closed between
County Roads 352 and 354 (the Levee Road) near Menfro.
* Impact: At 35.0 feet...Ste. Genevieve flood gates are closed at
this level.
* Impact: At 34.8 feet...Kaskaskia Street near the Menard Prison
begins flooding near this height.
* Impact: At 34.7 feet...The north parking lot at Menard Correctional
Center begins flooding.
* Impact: At 33.5 feet...Water Street in Chester begins flooding.
* Impact: At 33.0 feet...Within a foot of this height, Highway A is
closed between County Roads 448 and 460 at Wittenberg in southern
Perry County.
* Impact: At 32.5 feet...The Road at Fort Gage Farm begins flooding
at Menard Correctional Center.
* Impact: At 31.5 feet...In Perry County, Highway E is closed between
County Road 322 and Levee Road (County Road 354) at Bois Brule
Creek.
* Impact: At 28.0 feet...Unleveed islands near Chester and the prison
farm floods.
* Impact: At 27.0 feet...Flood Stage. Unprotected farmland on right
