...Winter Snow Storm Coming This Weekend...

On Saturday morning, a powerful winter storm is expected to be
moving into central and eastern Idaho, bringing not only heavy
snow for the mountains and highlands of the region, but also
strong wind. Lower elevations can expect moderate snow. The storm
will continue all day Saturday and into Saturday night, with some
leftover light snow on Sunday.

For the central Idaho mountains, 1 to 3 inches of snow are
expected at elevations below 6000 feet, 3 to 6 inches from 6000
feet to 7500 feet elevation, and 6 to 16 inches at elevations
above 7500 feet. This would include the road passing through
Galena Summit. Winds on Saturday afternoon and evening on exposed
ridges will be from the west and northwest at 15 to 25 mph with
higher gusts. This will easily cause drifting snow which can undo
snow control efforts and blowing snow that can reduce visibility
to near zero in windy areas.

For the Snake River plain and eastern Magic Valley, most locations
should see 1 to 3 inches of snow, with bench areas, such as those
in Pocatello, should see 3 to 5 inches of snow on Saturday and
Saturday night. The wind during this event will be strongest in
this area, with south to southwest wind of 20 to 30 mph with gusts
to 50 mph possible. Wind of this speed can easily drift snow back
over recently plowed roadways, making temporary road closures
possible. Blowing snow can cause visibility while driving to drop
to near zero quickly and without warning.

Finally, for the southern and eastern highlands, and the Cache
Valley and Bear Lake regions, expect widespread snowfall of 2 to
6 inches, except above 6500 feet elevation where it will be more 6
to 12 inches. Locations such as the Rockland and Raft River
Valleys will also see the strong wind Saturday afteroon and
evening, where the channeled wind can be very strong, producing
near white-out conditions.

Travelers expecting to be out and around Saturday, especially that
afternoon and evening, must be ready for winter driving
conditions. Check road conditions before departure by calling 5 1
1. Bring a kit containing blankets, snow shovels, and other
emergency gear, just in case.

Winds will return Sunday, but snow will be much lighter.
