AVALANCHE WARNING IN EFFECT FOR THE SOUTHERN MOUNTAINS OF
COLORADO...INCLUDING THE NORTHERN SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS...SOUTHERN SAN
JUAN MOUNTAINS...ISSUED BY THE COLORADO AVALANCHE INFORMATION
CENTER.

A POTENT WINTER STORM CONTINUES TO IMPACT THE COLORADO MOUNTAINS.
VERY DANGEROUS AVALANCHE CONDITIONS CURRENTLY EXIST AND WILL
CONTINUE INTO WEDNESDAY.

TRAVEL IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN IS NOT RECOMMENDED DURING THE WARNING
PERIOD.

* TIMING...BEGAN AT 06:00 AM ON 01/23/2017...EXPIRES AT 12:00 PM MST
ON 01/25/2017.

* AFFECTED AREAS...THIS WARNING INCLUDES...THE SAN JUAN
MOUNTAINS...SAN MIGUEL MOUNTAINS...RICO MOUNTAINS...UNCOMPAHGRE
PLATEAU...DALLAS DIVIDE...LA GARITA MOUNTAINS ABOVE 10000
FEET...LA PLATA MOUNTAINS...NEEDLE MOUNTAINS...GRENADIER
RANGE...EASTERN SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS ABOVE 10000 FEET.

* AVALANCHE DANGER...WILL BE HIGH (LEVEL 4) AT MULTIPLE ELEVATION
BANDS. AVALANCHES CAN RUN LONG DISTANCES...POSSIBLY COVERING
ROADWAYS AND REACHING VALLEY BOTTOMS.

* REASON...A STRONG WINTER STORM AND VERY STRONG WINDS ADDED A LARGE
AMOUNT OF SNOW OVER WEAK LAYERS IN THE SNOWPACK.

* PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...AVALANCHE CONDITIONS REMAIN
VERY DANGEROUS. HUMAN TRIGGERED AVALANCHES ARE VERY LIKELY.

CONTINUE THROUGH EARLY TUESDAY MORNING.

* SNOW ACCUMULATION...10 TO 20 INCHES WITH UP TO 2 FEET ON
SOUTHWEST-FACING SLOPES.

* WINDS...SOUTHWEST 25 TO 35 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 60 MPH TODAY
BECOMING WEST TO NORTHWEST AND DECREASING OVERNIGHT.

* IMPACTS...MOUNTAIN ROADWAYS WILL BECOME SNOW PACKED WITH
WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS CONTINUING THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THE
WEEK. VISIBILITIES WILL BE REDUCED TO UNDER A HALF MILE AT
TIMES DURING THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL AND FROM BLOWING SNOWFALL.

FRONT PASSES THROUGH THE REGION. PERIODS OF A RAIN SNOW MIX
WILL BE POSSIBLE THE LOWER ELEVATIONS MONDAY AFTERNOON BEFORE
PRECIPITATION TRANSITIONS BACK TO ALL SNOW MONDAY NIGHT WHEN
THE HEAVIEST ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED.

* SNOW ACCUMULATION...4 TO 8 INCHES WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS
EAST OF HIGHWAY 550.

* WINDS...SOUTHWEST 7 TO 12 MPH THIS MORNING THEN WEST AT 10 TO
20 WITH GUSTS OVER 25 MPH THIS AFTERNOON.

* IMPACTS...MOUNTAIN ROADWAYS WILL BECOME SNOW PACKED WITH
WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS EXPECTED THIS EVENING THROUGH
TUESDAY.
