THIS AFTERNOON FOR STRONG WINDS, LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY AND VERY
HIGH TO EXTREME FIRE DANGER FOR SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA...

The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a Red Flag
Warning for strong winds, low relative humidity and very high to
extreme fire danger, which is in effect from 8 AM this morning to
4 PM PST this afternoon.

* AFFECTED AREA...Joshua Tree National Park, eastern Riverside
County and portions of Imperial County.

* WINDS...North 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.

* TIMING...Today from mid-morning through late afternoon.

* RELATIVE HUMIDITY...As low as 8 percent.

* IMPACTS...Fuels are very dry and fire danger is very high to
extreme. These conditions combined with low relative humidity
and strong winds will lead to widespread hazardous fire weather
conditions.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Please advise the appropriate officials and fire crews in the
field of this red flag warning.

* TIMING...Winds will increase early this morning, peak in the
late morning and early afternoon before gradually decreasing by
evening.

* WIND...North 20 to 35 MPH with gusts up to 50 MPH...
especially near Laughlin and Bullhead City.

* HUMIDITY...10 to 15 percent.

* IMPACTS... A combination of strong winds...low relative
humidity...and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme
fire behavior. Any fires that develop will likely spread
rapidly.

STRONG GUSTY WINDS AND LOW HUMIDITY...

* LOCATION...Mainly along the coastal mountain slopes, extending
into the adjacent valley areas, including below the Cajon Pass
and inland Orange County.

* WIND...Northeast to east 20 to 35 mph...with gusts 50 to 55 mph.
Isolated gusts 65 to 70 mph on remote coastal slopes and
through wind-prone canyons.

* HUMIDITY...Minimum 5 to 8 percent, with very poor overnight
recovery in some areas.

* TIMING...Winds increasing this morning, and continuing into this
evening, then slowly decreasing overnight into Friday morning
from north to south.

* OUTLOOK...Another period of critical fire weather conditions is
possible Saturday night through Sunday night, due to another
increase in Santa Ana winds and low humidity.

* FIRE WEATHER IMPACTS...Any fires that develop will likely
spread rapidly and be difficult to contain. Outdoor burning
should be avoided.

* WIND IMPACTS...Hazardous driving conditions for high profile
vehicles. Specific freeways that may be impacted include
interstates 10, 215, 15 and 8. Blowing dust or sand may
locally reduce visibility to 1 mile. Debris on roadways and
falling tree branches possible.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions

* AFFECTED AREA...Portions of southeast California and the Lower
Colorado River Valley, with a focus on locations north and along
the Chocolate Mountains and the Algodones Sand Dunes. This
includes the Interstate 10 corridor and parts of Joshua Tree
National Park.

* TIMING...Today from mid-morning to late afternoon.

* WINDS...North 25 to 35 MPH with gusts to 45 MPH.

* IMPACTS...Strong cross winds will make driving difficult...
especially for high profile vehicles on east-west oriented
roads. Use extra caution. Blowing dust is also possible,
reducing visibilities.


PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Wind Advisory means that sustained wind speeds of between
30 and 40 mph are expected, or wind gusts of between 40 and
58 mph. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially
for high profile vehicles. In addition, strong winds over desert
areas could result in briefly lowered visibilities to well under
a mile at times in blowing dust or blowing sand. Use extra
caution.

choppy and hazardous...and may result in high waves which
could tip or swamp smaller craft.

Drivers should use caution and be prepared for sudden wind gusts.
Take action to secure trash cans...lawn furniture...and other
loose or lightweight outdoor objects. Boaters should avoid the
open waters and stay close to shore or around protected areas.
