High Surf Advisory
Ventura County Coast-
Los Angeles County Coast including Downtown Los Angeles-
Catalina and Santa Barbara Islands-
358 AM PST Thu Jan 18 2018

* SURF AND TIMING...Surf is expected to build today, peaking at 8
to 12 feet late tonight and Friday. Sets to 15 feet are possible
at exposed locations such as Ventura Pier. High surf will slowly
subside by Saturday evening.

* IMPACTS...Large, powerful, and dangerous waves with strong
currents will create an increased risk in drownings. Sneaker
waves can suddenly wash over previously dry beaches and
jetties. There will be also a high risk of life-threatening
rip currents. Damaging breaking waves are possible near the
entrance of the Ventura Harbor. Local flooding of low lying
beach parking lots will be possible with the high surf.

A High Surf Advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area...producing localized beach erosion and
dangerous swimming conditions. Swim near a lifeguard. If caught
in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the
current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If
unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

Winter Weather Advisory

551 AM PST Thu Jan 18 2018

* snow amounts and timing...3-6 inches of snow are expected with
highest amounts across the northern slopes of the Ventura
County Mountains. Generally 2-4 inches are expected across the
higher terrain of the Santa Barbara County Mountains and San
Gabriel Mountains.

* SNOW LEVELS..Snow levels will initially be around 7500 ft
tonight into early Friday morning. Snow levels will then
plummet to between 3500 and 4000 ft by Friday afternoon...and
locally down to 2500 ft across the northern slopes through
Saturday morning.

* WINDS...Northwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 40 mph
Early Friday afternoon will become north 20 to 30 mph with
gusts to 50 mph by Friday evening and continue through early
Saturday morning.

* MAIN IMPACT...Periods of snow, gusty winds, and low
visibilities make for dangerous driving conditions and could
lead to road closures and travel delays. Some roadways
affected will likely be Interstate 5 Corridor near the
Grapevine, as well as highway 2 (Los Angeles Crest Highway),
Highway 33 through the Ventura County Mountains and possibly
Highway 14 including the city of Acton.

Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities, and
use caution while driving. Check the latest road reports before
departing. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle which includes a
flashlight, food and water, extra clothes and blankets, and tire
