What is it?
We're happy to announce the latest version of our Interactive Weather Application, called the WeatherActive Map. If you've used the Interactive Map already on intellicast.com then the concept will not be new to you, but some of the features will be. For those that are new to the application, the WeatherActive Map is an interactive weather map which allows you to pan and zoom around a map of the world, turn on, and animate various weather layers in order to get a comprehensive view of both past and future weather events.
There are several new features that we're testing in this Field Trial. Below is a list of some of those new features...
New Menu Interface
The new version was built in Silverlight. This platform allows for a richer interactive experience, highlighted by a new menu control system. With the new system, you can now display multiple imagery layers at a time, so you can now, for example, display both satellite (clouds) and radar (rain/snow/mix) layers at the same time, and animate them together.
The new menu system also allows us to place the road and city names on top of the weather imagery for a clearer view of where you are on the map.
New Layer Ordering Control
Because multiple layers can now be displayed at a single time, there is a more advanced layer ordering control. This is located at the bottom right of the map, and you can click and drag the visible layers within this control to change their stacking order. You can also change each layer's opacity individually.
The new version of the map will support display and animation of forecast weather information. We're still working on the best menu control for the forecast layers, so you will notice this evolving during the field trial. Initially we will be starting with forecast radar, but we will be adding several other weather types as we go.
Why a Field Trial?
There's a lot of work that has gone into creating this new version of the map, including a reworked back-end system. We could have waited until everything was fully tested, but we wanted to get the map in front of users as soon as possible and get any feedback and suggestions while still in development so that we can make an even better product for final release.
Why Is This Different from a Final Release
During the field trial we will be actively improving the WeatherActive Map. Certain aspects of the map will change, such as the menu system, available layers, etc. Changes will be based on feedback from users, as well as development that is already in process. Also there may be some bugs that pop up that we need to hear from you about. If you have any issues to report, or any feedback you'd like to share, please use the feedback links to let us know. Without your feedback, we won't be able to provide you with the best possible product.
